The Organ
St Paul’s has some of the finest acoustics in the city
of Birmingham and this helps the existing instrument to still
sound rather fine, mainly due to the presence of some unaltered
1830s pipework by James Bishop. However, during the next few
years the instrument is going to require much drastic and very
expensive work. Although currently it sounds fine the poorly
conceived mechanics are now in a bad state of repair and have
are increasingly unreliable. The soundboards are in a very poor
condition and some of the pipework is showing signs of collapse.
Unfortunately only some of the pipework, mainly the original
Bishop ranks, will be worth restoring either economically or
artistically. The church is planning a major appeal to build a
new organ which incorporates the historic Bishop pipework in a
remodelled case.

The Choir
St Paul's has an adult choir which
plays a central role in the main Sunday service at 6.30pm each
week. Their repertoire ranges from plainsong to Tudor anthems
and motets, to modern works. The choir rehearses at 5.30pm
immediately prior to the service. This commitment of one-visit-per-week makes it ideal for
those who would find committing to a weeknight rehearsal
difficult. New members are always welcome. The ability to sight sing is not essential, but does help as
rehearsal time is limited. It is a real joy to sing in the fine
acoustic of St Paul's.
